Steve was raised on a farm in Indiana and studied political science and journalism at Franklin College. On the recommendation of a friend he started a job at the local telephone company where he began a decades-long career in telecommunications that found him managing national installations, supervising and engineering networks for Sprint and resettling in Virginia.
His membership in the CWA, a later return to college to complete his degree, and running his own small business have helped Steve better understand the challenges facing workers, entrepreneurs and anyone seeking self-improvement. Since retiring, Steve has coached youth soccer and chaired his local Democratic committee.
He and his wife Denette have been married for 28 years. When he is not studying history, science and current affairs, Steve enjoys fishing with his son Matt, a student at Laurel Ridge Community College.
